We are now reading "The House On Mango Street" by Sandra Cisneros.  The novel uses many themes but none as compelling as the emotional need for belonging.  In this unit we will be exploring the emotions associated with belonging and the different forms of alienation we may experience.

We all desire to feel complete, to belong to something important, to feel that our lives connect to those around us in a meaningful way.

What does it mean to belong?  What are some forms of alienation we may feel?  Think in terms of family, friends, community and country.  In the novel; what emotions does Esperanza struggle with?  How is she alienated from other children her age?  How is she alienated from Mexico/the US?

For this project you will explore several levels of alienation, gain a better understanding of the struggles faced by Mexican Americans, and connect with your own family's dynamic history.  Four projects will be completed over four weeks for a total of 100 points (each project is worth 25 points).

Project 1: Virtual Tour of Mexico

Project 2: News Concerning Border Issues

Project 3: Create a Family Tree

Project 4: Interview a Family Member or Close Friend

Follow the links I have setup for each project.  The directions are on each site and there is atleast one example of a completed project.

You may email me any questions you have wilson.miranda@sbcglobal.net or we can discuss your issues in class. Good luck and have fun!
